A twisty tale of murder in a posh public school, that will keep you guessing until the very end
Serial supply teacher, Henry Dance, arrives at Chapman’s School expecting just another humdrum posting. Instead, it turns out that his head of department is rather gorgeous, the Headmaster is a sociopath; and the Director of Drama is a jumpsuit clad tour de force, who ropes him in to her awful school musical. Oh, and there’s a very determined killer at the school.
Henry thinks that the first death wasn’t an accident, and now he’s told everyone, he’s convinced he’ll be the next victim. The clock is ticking, the body count is rising, and the end of term production is getting closer.
Join Henry behind the scenes of this English public school, as his world of obscure jazz, appalling staff room coffee and bitchy colleagues gets turned upside down by a mysterious death. Will his developing romance be ruined by his search for the truth? And will the truth make or break the dreadful end-of-term school play?
Immerse yourself in a twisty whodunnit, set in an English private school
Serial supply teacher, Henry Dance, is in trouble. Arriving at a school deep in the Norfolk Fens, he has to comb through the past misdemeanours of his colleagues. There are skeletons in everyone’s cupboard; and murky histories they would do anything to keep buried.
Still there are compensations, a pretty cottage to live in, a dog to care for and a few colleagues who begin to like him. Is this somewhere he can finally settle, and lay the ghosts of his past to rest?
Then a murder leaves Henry as the prime suspect, he must find the culprit or be arrested. The clock is ticking, the killer is closing in - and an old Barbour jacket has landed Henry in a career ending love triangle. Will he untangle the web of lies before it is too late? Or will this tango turn out to be his last dance?
“One of our finest private school mystery writers. A sparkling whodunnit and laugh out loud funny.” Orfordness Gazette
“Snuggling up with a Henry Dance novel is like having honey poured over me after a day in the classroom - soothing and yummy on toast.” Stephanie Webbwood, teacher at a very posh school
“These sorts of shenanigans are why we should ban private education.” East Suffolk Communist Party
Henry Dance and the Last Waltz of Death is under development and will be published late 2024 or early 2025
